Slap, 2014, Nick Rowland
Thematically, Slap is the closest short film to my own ideas: the exploration of gender identity, as well as masculinity, are particularly poignant to me and the narrative I want to create.
My immediate thoughts on Slap were my interest and like in the use mirrors and self-reflection through the respective props, and the breaking of the fourth wall. A film about self-expression and understanding one's own identity, requires a level of introspection. The close ups on Connors face, his features as he applies makeup, his features without makeup, all make for a detailed, careful viewing and through this, some insight and/or understanding.
The mis-en-scene plays an important role in Slap, so much so that i've taken into account greater thoughts on my own visual ideas. The blue of Connors room from the off-set stands out completely. In fact, the overall blue and grey tones and colouring of the short film are bold and a clear visual-emotional link of this great weight that Connor carries.
