Operator, 2015, Caroline Bartleet

The narrative of Operator is cyclical, in its emotional arc and character. It's hard to pin a 3-act-structure on this short film, as the plot is made to be as organic as possible- almost like we're watching a piece of fiction. The circularity comes from the character- the 'operator'. We only witness one phone call, one narrative, and as the short film comes to it's close, another phone call begins, another narrative.
The genre borders suspense and drama, perhaps even action when taking into consideration the other side of the phone call. The representation brings to light real-life situations- a special thanks to a fire service team can be seen in the credits- awareness perhaps is a goal of Bartleet's.
Throughout the short film we, the audience, are positioned with the Operator through a series of close ups and the stillness of the camera- these camera elements make us feel as though we've watched more than we actually have. This may also be down to the quality of the dialogue and the plot itself. This short film seems a lot longer than 6 minutes. The diegetic sound as the climax builds is intense, almost overwhelming, and then comes the overwhelming silence, when the call has ended, just as intense as the score.
